Azolla pinnata as a possible replacement of palm kernel cake in the diet of oreochromis niloticus. OceanDocs
Abioye, O.M.; Adeyemo, A.A.; Ayinla, O.A.; Bekibele, D.O..
Azolla pinnata as a possible replacement of the palm kernel cake in the diet of Oreochromis niloticus. Compounded diets from a control with palm kernel cake replaced at varying levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% with the aquatic fern (oven dried Azolla pinnata) were fed to Oreochromis niloticus for twelve weeks to determine the acceptability and utilization of the fern in the diet, verify the nutritional influence of the fern on the performance of the fish and possible optimum palm kernel cake replacement level. The fish readily accepted the test diets. Better growth responses were recorded in the treatments containing Azolla pinnata meal. The best response was observed in the 20% replacement level, thereby suggesting an optimum replacement. However...

Bioeconomic Analysis of Aquaculture's Impact on Wild Stocks and Biodiversity AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Anderson theorizes that development of the aquaculture of a species of fish (also captured in an open-access fishery) favours the conservation of its wild stocks, if competitive market conditions prevail. However, this theory is shown to be subject to significant limitations. While this is less so within his model, it is particularly so in an extended one outlined here. The extended model allows for the possibility that aquaculture development can impact negatively on wild stocks thereby shifting the supply curve of the capture fishery, or raise the demand for the fish species subject both to aquaculture and capture. Such development can threaten wild stocks and their biodiversity. While aquaculture development could in principle have no impact on the...

Cultivos de moluscos bivalvos OceanDocs
Pascual, M.S.; Zampatti, E.A..
Bivalve culture in Argentina is beginning to develop commercially. Research was carried out at the North Patagonian gulfs (San Matias, San Jose and Nuevo)and focused three native species: the tehuelche scallop Aequipecten tehuelchus, the puelche oyster Ostrea puelchana and the common mussel Mytilus edulis platensis. Results achieved on each of these three species were different. In the case of scallops, the development of commercial aquaculture did not seem promising for many years due to the fact that production was sustained by natural populations: the dredge fishery of the San Matias Gulf and the diving fishery of the San Jose Gulf. Preliminary culture experiments dealt with larval fixation on artificial collectors and growth to commercial size on...

Effect of season on controlled propagation of the African catfish, clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822). OceanDocs
Ayinla, O.A.; Nwadukwe, F.O..
The effect of season on the controlled propagation of C. gariepinus was investigated. The hypophysation of C. gariepinus using the pituitary extract from the sacrificed C. gariepinus was carried out from July, 1987 to June 1988. The female broodstock weight ranged from 0.50kg while the male weight, from 0.5kg to 0.6kg. The condition factor of the female broodfish was more or less uniform (1.3 to 1.7). The results showed that there was peak production of eggs by the female during the rainy season. Eggs production for rainy season ranged from 28,000 eggs/kg body weight in June to 37,600 eggs/kg body weight in August. The percentage hatching of the fertilized eggs was also higher in the rainy season than the dry season. The highest hatching of the...

Fatty composition of the developmental stage of some pond reared fresh water fishes in the oil palm belt of Nigeria. OceanDocs
Ayinla, O.A.; Idoniboye-Obu, T.I.E.; Omuaru, V.; Vehlow, U..
The fatty acid composition of the development stages (fingerling, juvenile and adult) of some pond raised fresh water fishes (Heterobranchus bidorsalis, ‘hybrid’ of H. bidorsalis and C. gariepinus, Chrysichtys nigrodigitatus, Heterotis niloticus and Oreochromis niloticus) were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Fatty acids abundant in the stages of these fishes are palm tic acid (C16:0), Oleic acid (C18:1) and Linolenic acid (C18:3w3) . Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) such as C20:4w6, C20:2w3 and C22:4w6 acids were present in small quantity. The common features of freshwater fish is evidently displayed namely the enrichment in linolenic (18:2w6) and / or linolenic (18:3w3) fatty acids. However the presence of high proportions of...

Growth response of clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822) on silage-based diets. OceanDocs
Ayinla, O.A.; Akande, G.R..
The feeding trial of C. gariepinus using three silage based diets and one fish meal based diet was carried out in concrete tanks. The four experimental diets were fed to C. gariepinus fry of relatively the same size. At the end of 8 weeks feeding trial the fish increased from their initial body weight of 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.4g and 0.4g to average final weights of 21.2g 15.4g, 12.8g and 13.8g respectively. The diet containing 41.1% resulted in the least food conversion efficiency of 1.2 over the eight weeks period. Of the experimental treatments the diets containing the highest level of fish silage (41.0%) performed better than any of the other two treatments of 19.0% and 33.5% fish silage contents. Apart from the nutritional superiority of 14% fish meal-based...

L'aquaculture du Macrobrachium rosenbergii aux Antilles Francaises ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis.
The aquaculture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii is launched in Martinigue by the regional council in 1976. A first "green water" type hatchery is built and provides juveniles to the first ponds. In 1978, CNEXO is asked to cooperate in scientific assistance. A new hatchery is built with COP "clear water" system and produces in 1980. The development of ponds (20 ha) needs the increase of the hatcheries capacity, which is now done with one single method and intensive larval first stage (7-8 millions PL. cap). In Guadeloupe, the first ponds started in 1978. Two cooperatives and 11 ha of ponds at this time have determined the construction of CNEXO in the construction of a regional hatchery. A small light one is already under production since July 83.
